Outgoing Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, predicted Vice President-elect JD Vance will be the GOP’s 2028 presidential nominee, calling him “smart” and “well-spoken.”

Vance, Trump’s 2024 running mate, helped defeat the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Romney credited Trump for making the GOP the party of working- and middle-class voters.

Sen. Mitt Romney argued that movements like defunding the police and allowing biological males in female sports have driven middle-class voters away from the Democratic Party, which he described as “in trouble.” He noted union workers have shifted to the GOP, adding, “The Democratic Party is seen not as rich people, but as college professors and woke scolds.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper, who was interviewing Romney, said “Trump has made it clear that he wants to go after his political opponents.” He then asked the senator whether he was worried that he or his family could be targeted “for retribution.”

Romney responded that Trump would likely seek to “focus on the future” and not retribution. Watch a segment of his interview below:
