A petition to ban Israel from the 2024 Olympics has gained significant traction, amassing over 500,000 signatures as of July 5, 2024. The petition responds to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which many signatories and supporters claim to be massacres and genocide.
Drawing parallels with South Africa’s expulsion from the International Olympic Committee in 1970 due to apartheid, the campaign aims to reach one million signatures. Promoted widely on social media, the petition calls for Israel’s exclusion from the games as a form of protest against its actions in Gaza.
The US-based nonprofit Avaaz had initiated the petition opposing Israel’s participation in the international event. Another petition, created by Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), calling for Israel’s suspension from international sports, has garnered over 107,000 signatures.
The 2024 Summer Olympics is set to begin on July 26 in Paris, France.
